In the Sepik area, suspension hooks are carved for domestic use. This is a simple yet very elegant food basket hook used throughout the Sepik River houses to suspend food and valuables on baskets to protect them from rats and insects. A single male ancestor figure forms the main body of the hook with the aim to protect the household from evil spirits.
